Rossdales Pregnant Mare and Stallion Course

Rossdales Pregnant Mare and Stallion Course

18th, 19th & 20th January 2017 The British Racing School, Newmarket

Rossdales held their first Pregnant Mare and Stallion Course at the British Racing School in January kindly sponsored by Eclipse Veterinary Software. The 68 delegates and 14 speakers from 11 countries attended together with 12 commercial companies.

On the first day which was devoted to the stallion, 13 presentations were given by international experts Dickson Varner (University of Texas, USA), Tom Stout (University of Utrecht, The Netherlands), Harald Sieme (University of Hannover, Germany) and Sandra Wilsher (Sharjah Equine Hospital, UAE) together with two UK speakers: Tullis Matson (Stallions AI) and Nick Wingfield Digby (Rossdales).

The morning of the second day was on early pregnancy with 8 presentations by Sandra, Tom and Mandi de Mestre (Royal Veterinary College) and in the afternoon the group was divided into 3 for interactive case discussions on the stallion, early pregnancy and late pregnancy.

10 presentations on early and late pregnancy were given on the last day and Karen Wolfsdorf (Hagyards Medical Centre, Kentucky, USA) was joined by Rossdales clinicians Ollie Pynn, Andrew McGladdery, Ian Cameron, pathologist Alastair Foote and researcher Jenny Ousey. The preultimate lecture was presented by Richard Newton (Animal Health Trust, Newmarket) on EHV-1.

Everyone was looked after very well by British Racing School and evening visits were arranged to the recently opened National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art followed by supper in The Tack Room and dinner in the 14th Century Old Hall at Queens’ College.

Excellent feedback was received including ‘thank you for a wonderful few days, challenging, stimulating and fun. The standard of work being done is humbling but it is great to hear of it. The few days were full, and so were we - serious dieting required after the cakes, cookies, lunches and not to mention the evenings’.

Andrew McGladdery, Senior Partner of Rossdales organised the programme and edited the 185 page spiral-bound book of lecture notes.

Jenny Ricketts of Whorl Publishing Limited administered the course.
